City of Cambridge Press Release
TEST ONLY TEST ONLY This is just a drill! TEST ONLY TEST ONLY
On 10/27/2016 at approximately 9:00 am a strong wind storm hit the City of Cambridge. It is apparent at this time that the heaviest damage is in the area of Goldenwood. Extending from Just South of the Government Center South to Central Avenue SW and from Main Street South west to the River. To date, no major injuries have been reported.
The Cambridge Christian School is in this area, but all students are accounted for and are fine. The School District has sent out a notification to all parents that their children are safe and will remain at the schools until the roads are passable and the City gives permission for travel within Cambridge. PLEASE STAY OUT of the affected area so we can concentrate our efforts on identifying damage, finding any injuries, and clearing streets.
Large trees are down everywhere in this vicinity blocking a most of the roads in Goldenwood. It also appears most structural damage was caused by trees falling on structures and not the wind itself. At this time we have Police working to set a perimeter around the damage concentration. Fire Crews are working through the area searching for any injuries and evaluating damage.
Progress with the search and rescue has been slow due to the downed power lines and numerous trees in the streets. At this time, citizens are encouraged to stay on home and work to gain accountability of family and neighbors. If you are home and safe, please stay home. If everyone is fine at your business or residence, please mark your front door with a sign saying “ALL FINE” on the front door. This will let Police and Fire know of you are ok so they can focus their search for persons with immediate needs.
Public works crews have started clearing roads for responder access. Residents will not be permitted back into the affected area until the streets have been cleared for at least one lane of traffic. When travel is permitted back in the affected area, residents will need to show their driver’s license to the police officer to get back into the damage area.
The area is full of downed powerlines. ECE and Connexus energy has initial response crews on scene assessing the situation. Centerpoint Energy is assembling a response crew and is not on site yet. It is imperative all responders treat all downed powerlines as hot, and report any signs of Natural Gas leaks. Electricity will be off for a minimum of 72 hours.
We ask that volunteers or tree services do not self-dispatch at this time. A staging area for equipment is established at the Isanti County Sheriff’s Office parking lot located at 2440 Main Street South. Tree service businesses will need to be credentialed prior to entering the affected area.
The City’s Facebook Page and websites will have updates posted as they are available. Press releases will be sent to the Isanti County News and Isanti County Star. KBEK (95.5 FM) will serve as the radio station for announcements.
